judgment apocalypse word cloud

Dads, get this one right with your children. No game playing. No wishful thinking. There is a coming judgment, and there is only one way to avoid this judgment, and that is believing in Jesus Christ.

Many people live in a world of pretend and “hope” that one day things will work out. However, one day, there will be no more pretending as absolute reality will set in with each person that has been born onto this planet.

  • (John 5:25–29 ESV) Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. 27 And he has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. 28 Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29 and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.

God did the only thing that a holy, righteous God could do. Sin had to be paid for. Wrath had to be taken by someone.

So he sent his Son to pay the price for our sins …

  • (John 3:16 ESV) For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

businessman lost indecisive

The progression of life and death in Scripture goes something like this:

  • LIFE through our Creator God->SIN & DEATH through rebellious humans.

From this death that came as a result of the sin of Adam, our world is different, much different than its beginning state of “very good.”

We do now live in a post-Eden world, and it is vital to understanding life on the planet 6,000 years later that we live in view of this world which God has judged and cursed.

To understand our salvation in Christ, we must understand the world we live in.

Today … We will examine the “lost” nature of humans.

  • (Luke 19:10 ESV) For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.

question mark giant men tethers

Is it possible to overstate something? To exaggerate its importance or significance?

    • For instance a person might overstate the significance of an upcoming event. Or overstate the value or importance of a controversial issue. They may exaggerate the fiscal value of a professional sports team to a city. Or the necessity of raising real estate taxes to finance a government program. Or the importance of every child attending summer school.
    • I am asking, generally speaking, is it possible for us to overstate something and exaggerate its significance to our lives?
    • I think that our answer would be, yes, it is very possible, and, yes, it happens often.
    • But I believe this morning that we have an event of which I don’t think that I can overstate its significance. In fact the event I speak of is cataclysmic, of which nothing matches in significance except the creation of this world, the coming of the Son of God to this Earth and the events that will end this world.
    • A cataclysm is a large-scale and violent event in the natural world; a sudden, violent upheaval, especially in a political or social context; a momentous and violent event marked by overwhelming upheaval and demolition; a catastrophe or a large-scale event that causes change or upheaval … apocalypse, mass destruction, Armageddon, annihilation, decimation, devastation, end of the world, holocaust are all words associated with cataclysm.
    • This morning we will look at the cataclysm of the fall of humankind. Adam and Eve rebelled against their Maker, disobeyed his words and chose a life direction in opposition to God that brought about global devastation and death.
    • As we enter the discussion this morning, we are going to direct our attention to the last question that God asks in Genesis three: “What is this that you have done?”

man thinking what is this that you have done

Next Question Up … “What is this that you have done?”

To understand our lives today, we need to understand what happened when the cataclysm hit from the rebellion of Adam and Eve.

Genesis three keeps yielding its fruit as to our foundation of belief concerning the salvation Christ accomplished for us on the Cross.

illustrate good works try hard etc

If we add to the gospel, we lose the gospel. Even more specifically, when a person or a group of people add a work to the gospel, the unique nature of the gospel is removed. Paul states this as the offense, or the stumbling block, being removed. So what is this offense or stumbling block that makes the gospel unique? The true gospel as taught by the Apostle Paul is based solely on the finished work of Jesus Christ. The theology of the gospel in Scripture is by grace through faith and no works.

Adding anything to the finished work of Christ completely changes the nature and character of the gospel. Adding works does not add any advantage, and, in fact, adding works to God’s gospel is not mere subtraction. And adding any work does not merely diminish the character of the gospel but completely changes the gospel to what Paul calls a different gospel, a distortion of what God has stated, a human tweak to God’s theology which makes this gospel contrary to what God has offered.

We must first understand that the gospel as presented in Scripture is God’s idea, and his alone. God’s plan for saving humankind. Anything else is rooted in the false teaching which seeks the approval and pleasure of people.
