And in doing so, we show how alike we are to the ancient Israelites with whom Jeremiah fought tooth and nail over the will of God for their lives.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Not their plan.<\/strong> They couldn&#8217;t let go of their plan to flee to Egypt from the invading Chaldeans and embrace God&#8217;s plan to surrender to Nebuchadnezzar and be shipped off to Babylon.<\/p>\n<h4>Sound familiar? The part about not being able to let go of our plans?<\/h4>\n<p><strong>But we prayed about it?<\/strong> They did pray. Ask Jeremiah. They wanted him to pray for God&#8217;s will for them. But they didn&#8217;t want God&#8217;s will, as we will see. No, what they wanted was God to bless their plan to go to Egypt.<\/p>\n<h4>Their request sounds so spiritual.<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>(<span lang=\"en-US\">Jeremiah 42:1\u20136<\/span> ESV)\u00a0<span lang=\"en-US\"><sup>1<\/sup> <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Then all the commanders of the forces, and Johanan the son of Kareah and Jezaniah the son of Hoshaiah, and all the people from the least to the greatest, came near <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><sup>2<\/sup> <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">and <strong>said to Jeremiah the prophet<\/strong>, \u201cLet our plea for mercy come before you, and <strong>pray to the <\/strong><\/span><strong><span lang=\"en-US\">Lord<\/span><\/strong><span lang=\"en-US\"><strong> your God for us<\/strong>, for all this remnant\u2014because we are left with but a few, as your eyes see us\u2014 <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><sup>3<\/sup> <\/span><strong><span lang=\"en-US\">that the <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Lord<\/span><\/strong><span lang=\"en-US\"><strong> your God may show us the way we should go, and the thing that we should do<\/strong>.\u201d <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><sup>4<\/sup> <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Jeremiah the prophet said to them, \u201cI have heard you. Behold, I will pray to the <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Lord<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> your God according to your request, and whatever the <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Lord<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> answers you I will tell you. I will keep nothing back from you.\u201d <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><sup>5<\/sup> <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Then they said to Jeremiah, \u201c<strong>May the <\/strong><\/span><strong><span lang=\"en-US\">Lord<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> be a true and faithful witness against us if we do not act according to all the word with which the <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Lord<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> your God sends you to us. <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><sup>6<\/sup> <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Whether it is good or bad, we will obey the voice of the <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Lord<\/span><\/strong><span lang=\"en-US\"><strong> our God<\/strong> to whom we are sending you, that it may be well with us when we obey the voice of the <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Lord<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> our God.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Liar, liar, pants on fire.<\/strong> So. How did they respond when they didn&#8217;t get the answer they wanted? They said Jeremiah\u00a0was lying and that God did not say that at all.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>(<span lang=\"en-US\">Jeremiah 43:1\u20132<\/span> ESV)\u00a0<span lang=\"en-US\"><sup>1<\/sup> <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">When Jeremiah finished speaking to all the people all these words of the <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Lord<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> their God, with which the <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Lord<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> their God had sent him to them, <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><sup>2<\/sup> <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Azariah the son of Hoshaiah and Johanan the son of Kareah and all the insolent men said to Jeremiah, \u201c<strong>You are telling a lie. The <\/strong><\/span><strong><span lang=\"en-US\">Lord<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> our God did not send you to say, \u2018Do not go to Egypt to live there.\u2019<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>They could not let go of &#8220;God&#8217;s got a wonderful plan for my life&#8221; and this is it.<\/h4>\n<p><strong>But not Daniel.<\/strong> Daniel learned this lesson well and faithfully served God for close to seven decades in a foreign, cruel, pagan culture.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Great plans indeed.<\/strong> God had great plans for Daniel. And as Daniel submitted to God&#8217;s plans for his life, God fulfilled his plan, not Daniel&#8217;s plan.
