Need to know.

Study the text and find the basic lessons and that’s really what it comes down to when God speaks to us. He will reveal to us what we need to know for obedience and worship and service.

• (2 Timothy 3:16–17 ESV) ¹⁶ All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, ¹⁷ that the man [and woman] of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

Sometimes at least could it be that it is not so much a matter of what we know or can prove, but what or Who will we obey?

Who do we trust?

Our obedience, or lack of, will tell us who we trust and who we love.

The “Woman” in Genesis three listened to the crafty serpent and allowed her belief in the goodness of God to be undermined. With her new perspective, skewed as it was, she defied God and her husband followed suit.

We have God’s account of creation. (More on that in a moment.)

A summary …
In the first few verses of this week’s text, we are given a summary of God’s creation week, and that is followed by more details concerning those first seven days.

Details forthcoming … 
We are given more details concerning the creation of the man, 2:5-7, then new information about a garden that the LORD God planted  in Eden, 2:8-14. Following this we see the LORD God took the man and put him in the garden to work and enjoy with one prohibition, 2:15-17. (God gave this prohibition to Adam, so I believe we would have to conclude that Eve got her “answer” to the serpent in chapter three from Adam. Just a side note for now.) The LORD GOD made a woman from the man for the man, 2:18-25.

But here is what really stood out to me, and the NASB captures it best:

• (Genesis 2:4 NASB95) This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made earth and heaven.

God’s account. We have God’s account from God’s holy book the Bible.

I know that is very plain and simple to see, but if we can stand outside of ourselves for a moment and see this in view of all earth history and in view of eternity.

Can we see how obvious this truth will be when we stand before the throne of God? Can we see how obvious this will be to those who fought God their entire lives when they stand before God’s great white throne of judgment?

Here it is. Plainly stated for all to read. The account of creation given to us directly by the Creator, the Sovereign Lord of the universe, the Lord God Almighty.

There it is, as simple and clear as anything to understand. Do we have questions about the origins of the universe? Then maybe we should read and believe the account of the Creator, the Holy God who spoke these things into being.

Maybe not a bad idea to take God at his word?

Another haunting reminder of rebellion for the unsaved will come from the testimony of the dating of our calendars. This year? AD 2016.

• The terms anno Domini (AD or A.D.) and before Christ (BC orB.C.) are used to label or number years in the Julian and Gregorian calendars. The term anno Domini is Medieval Latin, which means in the year of the Lord but is often translated as in the year of our Lord. It is occasionally set out more fully as anno Domini nostri Iesu (or Jesu) Christi (“in the year of Our Lord Jesus Christ”).
• This calendar era is based on the traditionally reckoned year of the conception or birth of Jesus of Nazareth, with AD counting years from the start of this epoch, and BC denoting years before the start of the era. There is no year zero in this scheme, so the year AD 1 immediately follows the year 1 BC. This dating system was devised in 525, but was not widely used until after 800.
• The Gregorian calendar is the most widely used calendar in the world today. For decades, it has been the unofficial global standard, adopted in the pragmatic interests of international communication, transportation, and commercial integration, and recognized by international institutions such as the United Nations.

  The Anno Domini dating system was devised in 525 by Dionysius Exiguus to enumerate the years in his Easter table. His system was to replace the Diocletian era that had been used in an old Easter table because he did not wish to continue the memory of a tyrant who persecuted Christians.

How tragically ironic this will be for billions.

God gives a clear account, and each person will one day stand before him and give their account.

• (Romans 14:11–12 ESV)¹¹ For it is written, “As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.” ¹² So then each of us will give an account of himself to God.
• (Matthew 12:36 NASB95)³⁶ “But I tell you that every careless word that people speak, they shall give an accounting for it in the day of judgment.
• (Revelation 20:11–15 ESV)¹¹ Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. From his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them. ¹² And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done. ¹³ And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done. ¹⁴ Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. Here I am again, wondering where another month has gone?

Here is this week’s bulletin.

• What does it matter? Well, it seems to matters a lot.
• Experience Day One of creation as you look up at the night sky and see the glory of God.
• Day Two finds you standing on an ocean shore, listening to the deafening roar and crashing of the waves.
• Day Three brings grass, flowers, trees, all plant life.
• Enter Day Four and observe the stars scattered over the heavens that declare God’s majesty. Go for a walk under a beautiful moon, drink in the beauty of God’s blue sky and feel the warmth and life of his great light.
• Listen to the music of Day Five as birds tweet, coo, shriek and caw. Or be captured by the performance of an eagle in the sky or a great whale on the open sea.
• Day Six introduces lions roaring and elephants trumpeting. All the land creatures. Foxes showing off their speed and oxen their brute strength.
• Travel this earth and see the the uncharted territories that God spoke into being, the wonders of unpolluted oceans and rivers teeming with water creatures and green, vibrant forests alive with animals hanging from the trees and beasts of every kind crawling, hopping and running across the ground. Explore the universe in all of it’s stunning immensity and variety of color and shape and form. And marvel at the greatness of our God.
• But if you want to experience the peak, the pinnacle, the top, the zenith, the apogee, the apex, the height, the crown, the climax …
• If you want to travel to the summit and visit the spire of God’s creation to see his greatest work, then I invite you to the afternoon of Day Six, where God took council with himself and decided to make humans in his image, and after his likeness.

• (Hebrews 11:3 ESV) By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.

Faith. There is one way, and only one, by which we understand the origins of the universe. We believe God. We value his written word above all else.

For any of us to come to an understanding of creation that fits God’s ultimate reality, we must believe God. Trust his word.

You may think that is a given among professing believers, but I don’t think so. We hedge and dodge and weave. When it comes down to it, we want to believe what we want to believe and what we already to believe AND what does not change our lifestyle or life direction.

All at odds with a Sovereign Lord.

And all robbing us of the abundance Jesus Christ offers in his gift of eternal life.
